At Wilson Logistics, developing drivers goes far beyond getting them behind the wheel – it’s about helping them build real, sustainable careers. With decades of experience and a passion for mentorship, Jack Ewing, Director of Driver Development, plays a key role in making that happen.

We took time to ask Jack what sets Wilson apart from other companies, along with how his “Making Cents” program is helping drivers become successful business owners.

Q: Can you tell us a bit about your background?

A: I’ve been in the trucking industry for about 38 years, and I’ve been with Wilson Logistics for 8 years. For the past 7 years, I’ve been teaching our driver development program. Over that time, I’ve trained about 400 students, usually around six a week. There’s nothing better than seeing drivers go from learning the ropes to running their own business.

Q: What is the “Making Cents” program?

A: “Making Cents” is a straightforward course that teaches drivers how to become small business owners. It focuses on helping drivers track revenue and expenses so they can run a successful operation. It’s simple, practical, and focused on real-world results. Drivers walk away knowing exactly how to run their own operation, and it’s designed so anyone can follow it.

Q: Why did you create this program?

A: Wilson Logistics needed a program that would help drivers succeed. Too many companies just put their drivers on the road and leave them to figure it out on their own. We wanted to give our drivers the tools and confidence to thrive as independent contractors, not just survive as employees. 

Q: How long is the program?

A: The class lasts six hours long. It’s concise but packed with information drivers can put to use immediately. Drivers walk away with the essentials to succeed.  

Q: How is this different from what other companies offer?

A: Most companies just expect their drivers to figure it out on the road. At Wilson, we take a much more hands-on approach. We guide drivers through every step. And even after the course, they can reach out to me at any time with questions or advice. That support Is what sets us apart from other companies. 

Q: Have you seen success from the program?

A: Absolutely. Over 7 years, we’ve seen drivers go through the program and build thriving businesses. The course is constantly evolving; I recently revamped it to make it stronger. We are always improving based on what drivers need.
